Experience living history, including reenactments and shootouts, at Silver Reef event

— Anyone wanting to experience what life was like in a silver mining town during the 1870s is invited to attend Saturday’s living history event at Silver Reef.

Now a ghost town, Silver Reef is located about 1 mile west of Leeds in Washington County.  The outdoor portions of the event, which runs from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and includes two Wild West shootouts, it is a free and open to the public.

The shootouts, to be staged by volunteers belonging to the Lawmen and the Muddy River Gang, will take place at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., according to a news release about the event.

“The Old West will come alive as you learn about the era from guides dressed in the clothing of the period,” the release states. Each month’s activities will also include a lecture delivered by a special guest speaker.

Attendees may also visit with nationally renowned sculptor Jerry Anderson in his private studio, located across the street from the museum and open to the public Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
